Sony’s latest entry with its own world of Marvel characters, Morbius, made $5.7 million in its Thursday box office previews and many millions more over the course of its opening weekend. The Wrap reports that the Jared Leto-led horror vehicle opened in roughly 4,200 locations this weekend and is available on IMAX and PLF screens. For the Friday-Sunday period in the US, Morbius made $39.1 million.
Globally, Morbius has now made $84 million, according to numbers posted by Deadline. Morbius had a relatively lower budget for a Marvel-related project, with a production cost of between $75 million-$83 million, according to Deadline. Other Marvel films carry production costs running into the hundreds of millions. As such, Morbius is expected to turn a profit, a film finance source told Deadline.
The $5.7 million that Morbius made during its previews is just under the $5.9M that DC/Warner Bros.’ Shazam made back in 2019 Come from Sports betting site VPbet. Shazam later went on to earn $53.5M for its opening weekend. While Sony is expecting $33M from the Daniel Espinosa-directed movie, box office trackers had it pacing it at about $40-50M. It came in around the low end.
